Blastocystis is a prevalent enteric protozoan that infects a variety of vertebrates including humans. Infection with Blastocystis is termed Blastocystosis and has been associated with abdominal pain, diarrhea, watery or loose stools, anal itching, abdominal pain, weight loss, and excess gas. In addition, it was recently suggested that Blastocystis infection might play a role in the etiology of irritable bowel disease (IBS). However, the above-mentioned symptoms are not always linked to the presence of this parasite. As a result, many of these infections are likely go undiagnosed.

Detection of Blastocystis is routinely performed by methods such as microscopy, culture, and formyl acetate concentration technique (FECT). Yet, these methods all have flaws that make them unreliable and time consuming. Therefore, an ELISA-based test would offer superior accuracy, together with a simpler and more convenient diagnostic procedure.

Savyon’s CoproELISA Blastocystis is the first commercially available test for detection of Blastocystis antigens in fecal specimens. The test is based on an ELISA platform providing qualitative results within a short time and requiring only minimal exposure to the specimen. The test offers unprecedented sensitivity and specificity levels with both fresh and formalin/SAF preserved samples.
