Fast Point-of-Care PROM Assessment with ProLab AmnioTest™

When a woman presents with suspected rupture of membranes, rapid assessment is important. ProLab AmnioTest™ provides a simple point-of-care method to support the clinical evaluation of suspected PROM.

What is PROM?

Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM) occurs when the amniotic sac ruptures before labour begins. At term (37 weeks or later), PROM occurs in approximately 8–10% of pregnancies. When rupture occurs before 37 weeks, it is referred to as Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM) and carries increased risks for both mother and baby.

Early recognition of membrane rupture is important because PROM may increase the risk of:

  • Maternal infection 
  • Chorioamnionitis 
  • Neonatal infection 
  • Umbilical cord complications 
  • Preterm birth (in cases of PPROM) 

It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from normal vaginal discharge or urinary leakage based on symptoms alone, so further assessment is needed.

How does ProLab AmnioTest™ work?

ProLab AmnioTest™ is a simple pH-based swab designed to support healthcare professionals rapidly evaluate PROM, improving confidence for both clinicians and patients.

Amniotic fluid is naturally more alkaline than the normal vaginal environment. AmnioTest™ uses nitrazine dye on a sterile swab to detect this change in pH. The indicator changes colour when exposed to alkaline fluid, providing a visual result in approximately 15 seconds. The result is interpreted at the point of care without analysers or specialised equipment.
