The isolated beta-chain of hCG is used for immunization. A0231 cross-reacts with human luteinizing hormone (LH). For immunohistochemical use, the cross-reaction with LH will not cause misinterpretation, and A0231 is well-suited for the demonstration of hCG in trophoblastic elements of germ cell tumors. A0231 is also well-suited for pregnancy tests. For these tests a sensitivity of 1000 international units (IU) hCG/L is required. For monitoring tumor patients, assays with a sensitivity of 10 IU hCG/L are necessary. For such assays A0231 ought not to be used.
